Message from Hwa Chong’s Principal for the US Overseas Support Group

Dear Hwa Chongians,
     Greetings! Whilst you have begun to author another exciting chapter in your life, the personalities, pleasures, and places in Hwa Chong undoubtedly remain vivid in your mind. Your time in Hwa Chong—be it two, four, or even six years—may have passed in the blink of an eye; but the memories you have made will remain with you for years to come.

     It is with great joy that we read and hear about the good work that many of you have done to fly the Hwa Chong flag high. Just last year alone, 6 of our former students topped their class at Harvard, Princeton, Military Academy in West Point, and even in institutions beyond America: in Oxford, London School of Economics, and Fudan. Several of these outstanding graduates penned a short message in our school newsletter, Panorama, to motivate their juniors. These ex-students inspired their juniors, not just through their accomplishments, but also through their words. Their actions embody our guiding principle, 饮水思源, to remember the source from which one drinks. Many other Hwa Chongians—like yourself—have also enjoyed success in various arenas. Hwa Chong is proud of you.

     In November 2008, you may have read the happy news in The Washington Times: a group of Hwa Chong students was featured for winning the Extreme Collaboration Award conferred by Stanford University in its Global Innovation Challenge Tournament. Our students worked with their peers from the Loudoun County Academy of Science, Virginia—across twelve time zones—to create an award-winning video. This is a prime example of the kind of virtual collaboration that has been made possible by technology, and one which we hope you will undertake. With your strengths and areas of passion, you can provide valuable mentorship to your juniors as they embark on a whole array of projects. They will benefit immensely from your expertise in your chosen subject areas and the wisdom from your vast and deep experiences. With your help, the Hwa Chong tradition of excellence can continue to blaze forth.

     In the end, remember our school’s philosophy: 己立立人，己达达人. We hope that you will always exemplify the spirit of giving back — be it on the individual, community, national, or even global level. Last but not least, when you come back to Singapore—whether for a short visit or permanently—do remember to drop by Hwa Chong to say "Hello". Witness how the physical campus has changed since you graduated, while the atmosphere of family remains constant.

     May all of you continue to Live with Passion and Lead with Compassion!
